Burberry, which has consistently supported British art and culture, is presenting the exhibition 'A New British Modernity', going beyond mere collaborations to create a cultural meaning within fashion.

The Burberry Art Space, which introduces British artists through Burberry Flagship, symbolizes Burberry's spirit of dedication to and support for the British art scene. The brand has supported exhibitions such as Happy Gas by British artist Sarah Lucas at the Tate Modern, and also participated as the main sponsor of the UK Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale. Continuing its long-standing commitment to supporting art and culture, Burberry will present A New British Modernity at the 4th floor of Burberry Seoul Flagship, running until November 10. The exhibition features works by contemporary British artists Jemima Murphy, Pam Evelyn, and Sarah Cunningham, offering unique interpretations of nature, the environment, and personal experiences through each artist’s distinct perspective. All three artists are young talents currently garnering attention in the British contemporary art scene, sharing common traits as women experimenting with new abstract painting while developing their aesthetic worldview and expressive sensibility.

Among the artists involved in this meaningful exhibition, Sarah Cunningham visited the Burberry flagship store in Seoul and shared insights about her work.

Q: I understand this is your first time in Seoul. What impression did you have of the city?
I actually arrived in Seoul just yesterday. I haven’t had the chance to explore much yet, but I took a brief walk last night and got the impression that it’s an energetic place. I will be staying for about six days, and I plan to explore and experience the city more during that time.

Q: There are three of your works  in the Burberry Art Space, each with a different size. Could you explain this?
The different sizes of the works were intentionally created. The size of the artwork itself carries a conceptual network that invites the audience closer. In my studio, I move both large and small paintings around, testing the intimacy and tension that exists between the works. This is why I would say there’s a dynamism within the works themselves.

Q: It's interesting that the size of the works reveals dynamism. Could you elaborate?
For example, when people look at smaller paintings, they tend to approach them more closely. It draws the viewer in, increasing empathy. By reducing the physical distance, a more intimate dialogue between the artwork and the viewer becomes possible. I hope that, within the Burberry Art Space, viewers can actively engage with the works as they move between pieces of different sizes.

Q: When you arrive at your studio, what is the first process you usually go through?
It takes me a little time to dive into painting when I first arrive at the studio. I usually start by having some tea or adjusting to the environment before actually beginning my work. I especially try to avoid going straight to the pieces I’ve been working on recently. I believe that the first reaction to a piece after some distance is the most honest and important one.

Q: Can you share more about your creative process?
I tend to work mostly at night. I prefer the quiet and silence of the night, with no distractions, which allows me to immerse myself fully in my work. The colors and forms seem to emphasize different relationships under the quiet conditions of night, and it almost feels like dreaming.

Q: Do you attach a lot of meaning to the titles of your works?
I believe that even if there is no visible space or area between the work and the title, that very space can become a subject in itself. I prefer when the work and the title flow in harmony with each other, resonating with one another.

Q: Could you briefly describe one distinctive feature of your working style?
I tend to work on square canvases. The reason I prefer them is that I can always change the direction I begin working from, and I can shift the perspective without any limitations. This flexibility creates a very dynamic sense of space in the work.

Q: It seems that it’s not just the work itself, but also the process, the title, and other elements that complete the overall artwork. Do you feel that the space plays a similar role? Could you share your impression of the Burberry Seoul flagship?
This is my first experience in Seoul, and when I heard that my work would be displayed here, I couldn’t quite imagine what the space would be like. However, once I entered the space, I was very satisfied. The natural light falling on the works and the overall feeling of the space really enhanced the exhibition’s sense of completion.

영국의 미술과 문화를 꾸준히 후원하고 있는 버버리가 단순 협업을 넘어 패션의 문화적 의미를 창출하는 전시 <새로운 브리티시 모더니티>를 선보인다.

영국의 아티스트들을 버버리 스토어를 통해 소개하는 ‘버버리 아트 스페이스’는 영국 예술계에 헌정하고 지원하는 버버리의 정신을 상징한다. 테이트 모던 미술관에서 열린 영국 작가 사라 루카스의 전시 <Happy Gas>를 지원한 바 있고, 제60회 베니스 비엔날레 국제미술전 영국관 메인 스폰서로 참여하기도 했다. 이처럼 오랜 시간 예술과 문화를 지속적으로 후원해온 버버리가 오는 11월 10일까지 버버리 서울 플래그십 매장 4층에서 <새로운 브리티시 모더니티(A New British Modernity)>전을 진행한다. 영국의 현대미술가 제마이마 머피(Jemima Murphy), 팸 에블린(Pam Evelyn), 사라 커닝햄(Sarah Cunningham)이 참여한 이번 전시에서는 자연과 환경 그리고 개인적 경험을 각 아티스트의 독창적 시각으로 해석한 작품들을 만나볼 수 있다. 이들은 모두 현재 영국 현대미술계가 주목하는 젊은 미술가들로, 여성이라는 점과 새로운 추상회화를 실험하며 자신의 미학적 세계관 및 표현 감각을 발전시키고 있다는 공통점이 있다.

이 의미있는 시작을 함께한 작가 제마이마 머피(Jemima Murphy), 팸 에블린(Pam Evelyn), 사라 커닝햄(Sarah Cunningham) 중 사라 커닝햄이 서울 플래그십에 방문하여 작품에 관한 이야기를 들려주었다.

Q 서울에 처음 온 것으로 알고 있습니다. 어떤 인상을 받으셨나요? 

사실 어제 서울에 도착했어요. 아직 많은 곳을 둘러보지는 못했지만 어제 밤에 살짝 둘러보며 에너제틱한 곳이라는 인상을 받았어요. 약 6일간 머물 예정인데 그 시간 동안 서울을 많이 둘러보고 느끼고 갈 예정입니다. 

Q 버버리 아트 스페이스 전에 설치된 작가님의 작품은 총 3개 입니다. 각기 다른 사이즈가 인상적인데요. 이 부분을 설명해주실 수 있을까요? 

사실 각기 다른 작품의 사이즈는 다분히 의도적으로 제작했어요. 관객에게 다가가는 작품의 사이즈 자체가 네트워크적인 콘셉트를 가지고 있습니다. 저는 스튜디오에서 크고 작은 페인팅들을 움직여가면서 작품들 사이에 존재하는 친밀감과 긴장감을 시험해보고 있어요. 그래서인지 제 작품들 사이에는 일련의 역동성이 담겨 있다고 말할 수 있겠네요. 

Q 작품 사이즈가 역동성을 드러낸다는 말이 흥미롭습니다. 

예를 들어, 작은 그림을 바라볼 때는 관람객이 작품의 가까이 다가가게 되죠. 관객을 끌어당기는 거에요. 공감도 높아지고요. 물리적인 거리를 좁히면서 작품과 관객 사이에 친밀한 대화가 가능해지는 것이죠. 버버리 아트 스페이스라는 공간 안에 각기 다른 사이즈의 작품 사이를 오가며 관객들이 능동적으로 작품을 느낄 수 있었으면 해요.

Q 작업실에 도착하면 주로 어떤 과정을 먼저 거치나요? 

저는 작업실에 도착해서 페인팅 작업을 본격적으로 하기까지 시간이 조금 걸리는 편이에요. 작업실에 도착해서 차를 마시거나 하면서 그 환경에 먼저 적응을 하면서 작업을 하기까지 정리하는 시간을 갖는데요. 특히 그간 작업하면서 손을 많이 댄 작품에 바로 가까이 가는 것을 최대한 피하는 편이에요. 아무래도 작업을 바로 접했을 때의 첫 반응이야말로 솔직한 것이고, 중요하다고 여기기 때문이죠. 

Q 작업 과정 또한 들려줄 수 있을까요? 

저는 주로 밤에 작업을 하는 경우가 많아요. 적막하고 조용한 상태, 방해 요소가 없는 상태에서 작업에 몰입하는 것을 선호하죠. 낮과 다르게 다른 색상과 형태의 어떤 연관성이 강조돼서 보이기도 하고요. 마치 꿈을 꾸는 듯한 느낌을 갖기도 합니다.

Q 작품의 제목에 많은 의미를 부여하는 편인가요? 

저는 작품과 제목 사이에 위치한 어떤 공간이나 영역이 보이지 않아도 그 자체가 하나의 소재가 될 수 있다고 믿어요. 그래서 작품과 제목이 일맥상통하는 흐름을 갖고 있는 것이 좋다고 생각하는 편이에요.

Q 작가님의 작업 스타일의 특징적인 면을 한 가지 정도 간략히 설명해주시면 좋을 거 같습니다. 

저는 주로 정사각형의 캔버스에 작업하는 것을 선호하는 편입니다. 그 이유를 꼽자면 작업을 어떤 방향에서 시작하던 끊임없이 바꿀 수 있고, 매번 동등하게 작품에서 멀어질 수 있기 때문이거든요. 그런 작품에서 드러나는 공간감이 굉장히 유동적으로 느껴지기 때문이기도 하고요. 

Q 작품 그 자체만이 아니라, 작업에 들어가는 과정 그리고 제목 등 다양한 요소가 작업 전체를 완성하는 거 같은데요. 공간 역시 그렇지 않을까 싶습니다. 서울 버버리 플래그 십에 대한 인상도 말씀 부탁드립니다. 

이번 방문은 저에게 있어서 첫 서울에 대한 경험인데요. 이 공간에 작품이 전시된다고 했을 때 어떤 형태일지 전혀 상상하지 못했어요. 그런데 공간에 들어서고 매우 만족했어요. 자연스럽게 작품 위로 떨어지는 자연광이나 공간이 주는 느낌이 전시의 완성도를 높이고 있다는 인상을 받았습니다.
