The Burberry Art Space, which introduces British artists through Burberry Flagship, symbolizes the brand’s spirit of dedication to and support for the British art scene. Burberry has supported exhibitions such as Happy Gas by British artist Sarah Lucas at the Tate Modern, and participated as the main sponsor of the UK Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale. With its long history of continuously supporting art and culture, Burberry is currently hosting the 'A New British Modernity' exhibition at the 4th floor of Burberry Seoul flagship until November 10. The exhibition features works by contemporary British artists Jemima Murphy, Pam Evelyn, and Sarah Cunningham, offering unique interpretations of nature, the environment, and personal experiences through each artist’s distinct perspective. All three artists are young talents currently garnering attention in the British contemporary art scene, sharing the common traits of being women experimenting with new abstract painting while developing their aesthetic worldview and expressive sensibility.

Jemima Murphy

Born in London, Jemima Murphy reimagines the sublime qualities of nature to create unique visual experiences. Drawing from an improvised approach (having studied theater, she immerses herself in the process like a performance in front of the canvas), her works are completed with rhythmic brushstrokes that explore the balance between abundance and deprivation, pain and joy. She holds master's degree from the City & Guilds Art School in London and has participated in several prominent exhibitions, including shows at EDJI Gallery in Brussels, Almine Rech (a leading European contemporary art gallery), and Gillian Jason Gallery, the only female artist gallery in the UK. She has also held solo exhibitions, including Tempest. In October 2022, she was awarded the Young Master’s Art Prize, which highlights emerging British artists. Art critic Kang Su-mi commented on Murphy’s work, saying, “As hinted by how she chose the “sublime” as a keyword for her paintings, her works internalize certain fears and decadence that are not easily nailed down.”

Pam Evelyn

Pam Evelyn is an artist who intuitively projects her diverse life experiences onto the canvas, creating vibrant energy within complex compositions. Her works go through a process akin to discipline, where she layers and scrapes the paint, then begins anew. Evelyn deliberately seeks discomfort in her creative process, whether by removing panels, rotating the canvas, or working from the floor. By testing her own limits, she expands her visual vocabulary. Her paintings reveal visual and spatial tension between gestures and forms, offering a fresh visual experience. Evelyn earned her bachelor's degree from the Slade School of Fine Art and her master's degree from the Royal College of Art. She has participated in various international exhibitions and recently held a solo exhibition titled A Handful of Dust at Pace Gallery in London.

Sarah Cunningham

Art critic Kang Su-mi described Sarah Cunningham’s work as follows: “When seen from nearby, Cunningham’s canvases remind one of a boxing ring in which primal gestures and matter fight in. But when the viewer steps back a certain distance, her paintings begin to resemble a vast, open field upon which sturdy structures are erected or a forest packed with thick flora and embosoming a cavernous darkness. This feature causes the viewer to undergo a cognitive experience in which one’s eyes are turned into an imaginary budget drone charging into the interiors of her edgeless landscapes.” Cunningham is known for creating complex psychological landscapes inspired by nature, fantasy, and dreams. Her works are often created during the night, with deep blues and greens, capturing the atmosphere of dawn. She holds a master’s degree from the Royal College of Art and has held solo exhibitions at Almine Rech Gallery in New York, and at Lisson Gallery in London and Los Angeles. Her works often show a repeated process, a continuous gesture aimed at revealing the hidden aspects of nature.

BURBERRY x Sarah Cunningham Interview

Q How did you become involved in the Burberry exhibition?
I was first approached by my gallery, Lisson Gallery. I saw that artists Pam Evelyn and Jemima Murphy, whom I’ve known, were also participating, which led me to consider the opportunity positively. I hadn’t known that Burberry had an art program like this, and since I’ve never exhibited in Seoul before, I think this is a very meaningful experience.

Q Since Burberry is such a traditional brand, this exhibition must hold even more significance for you.
Burberry has had its iconic check pattern for such a long time, and the way they continue to reinterpret and transform it today is meaningful. In the art world, too, I believe we should look back at the past and observe how things are changing, especially socially and economically. In that sense, I see a parallel. My family is really excited about this exhibition, as Burberry is a renowned British brand with both tradition and history.

Q Where do you usually draw inspiration from for your work?
I get my inspiration from nature, particularly the light in nature. It’s not just nature itself, but also photographs of nature, as well as Eastern and Western paintings that influence my use of color.

Q I noticed that you tend to work from night into the morning. Does that time of day influence your inspiration?
Yes, that definitely plays a role. Since I work at night, the passage of time naturally becomes part of the work.

Q As a young British artist, and with Burberry being a brand that represents Britain, what do you think the collaboration between fashion and art will mean for the future?
As I mentioned before, both the art and fashion industries record history, especially in terms of social and economic aspects. Fashion changes much more quickly than art, but I think it’s important that both fashion and art are embraced by the public in a way that resonates with their emotions, allowing for limitless imagination.

Q This is your first exhibition in Korea. Is there any message you’d like to convey?
The message I want to convey is about a natural flow. Even though this is an art exhibition, it’s being presented by Burberry, a fashion brand. Just as two very different fields can coexist in the same space in a natural flow, I want to communicate that there’s no need to stay confined to a defined framework.

영국의 아티스트들을 버버리 스토어를 통해 소개하는 ‘버버리 아트 스페이스’는 영국 예술계에 헌정하고 지원하는 버버리의 정신을 상징한다. 테이트 모던 미술관에서 열린 영국 작가 사라 루카스의 전시 <Happy Gas>를 지원한 바 있고, 제60회 베니스 비엔날레 국제미술전 영국관 메인 스폰서로 참여하기도 했다. 이처럼 오랜 시간 예술과 문화를 지속적으로 후원해온 버버리가 오는 11월 10일까지 버버리 서울 플래그십 매장 4층에서 <새로운 브리티시 모더니티(A New British Modernity)>전을 진행한다. 영국의 현대미술가 제마이마 머피(Jemima Murphy), 팸 에블린(Pam Evelyn), 사라 커닝햄(Sarah Cunningham)이 참여한 이번 전시에서는 자연과 환경 그리고 개인적 경험을 각 아티스트의 독창적 시각으로 해석한 작품들을 만나볼 수 있다. 이들은 모두 현재 영국 현대미술계가 주목하는 젊은 미술가들로, 여성이라는 점과 새로운 추상회화를 실험하며 자신의 미학적 세계관 및 표현 감각을 발전시키고 있다는 공통점이 있다.

Jemima Murphy

런던에서 태어난 제마이마 머피는 자연의 숭고함을 재구성해 독특한 시각적 경험을 선사한다. 즉흥적인 움직임을 바탕으로(연극을 전공한 덕에 캔버스 앞에서 마치 퍼포먼스를 하듯 작품에 몰입한다) 리드미컬한 붓 터치를 더하는 방식으로 완성되는 그의 작품에서는 풍요와 결핍, 고통과 행복 사이의 균형을 살펴볼 수 있다. 런던 시티 & 길즈 아트 스쿨에서 석사 학위를 받은 그는 최근에는 신진 예술가들의 작품을 선보이는 브뤼셀의 EDJI 갤러리와 유럽 현대미술계에서 유명한 알민 레쉬(Almine Rech), 영국의 유일한 여성 아티스트 갤러리인 질리언 제이슨(Gillian Jason) 등 주요 갤러리에서 열린 여러 전시에 참여했으며 개인전 <Tempest>도 진행했다. 또한 2022년 10월에는 영국 내 떠오르는 예술가들의 작품을 소개하는 ‘Young Master’s Art Prize’에 선정되기도. 미술평론가 강수미는 머피의 작품을 “즉흥적이고 성마르게 그린 붓질들이 최종적으로는 화려하면서도 격조 있는 하나의 그림으로 종합되며, 자기 작업의 키워드를 ‘숭고’로 제시한 것처럼 규정하기 힘들지만 어떤 두려움과 데카당스를 내면화했다”고 평했다. 

Pam Evelyn

삶의 다양한 경험을 캔버스에 직관적으로 투영하여 복잡한 구성 속에서 생동감을 연출하는 아티스트 팸 에블린. 그는 물감층을 섬세하게 더하고 긁어낸 후 다시 작업을 시작하는, 이를테면 수련에 가까운 과정을 거친 작품을 선보인다. 또한 에블린은 의도적으로 작업 과정에서 불편함을 물색한다. 패널을 제거하거나 캔버스를 옆으로 돌리고, 바닥에서 작업하거나 작품의 특정 부분을 가리는 등 자신의 한계를 시험하며 본인의 시각적 어휘를 확장해나간다. 이처럼 에블린의 회화는 몸짓과 형태 사이의 시각적·공간적 긴장을 드러내며, 새로운 시각적 경험을 제공한다. 런던 슬레이드 미술학교에서 학사를, 왕립예술학교에서 석사를 취득한 그는 여러 국제 전시회에 참여했으며, 최근에는 런던 페이스 갤러리에서 개인전 <A Handful of Dust>를 열었다.

Sarah Cunningham

미술평론가 강수미는 사라 커닝햄의 작업에 대해 “커닝햄의 화면은 가까이서 보면 원초적 몸짓과 물질의 격투기장 같다. 하지만 일정 거리를 두고 뒤로 물러나서 보면 그 그림들은 단단한 구조물이 들어선 광막한 대지 혹은 수풀이 빽빽하게 들어차서 깊은 어둠을 품은 숲을 연상시킨다. 그래서 감상자는 자신의 눈이 마치 저성능 드론이나 된 것처럼 그 뭉툭한 풍경들의 내부로 돌격해 들어가는 것 같은 지각 경험을 하게 된다”고 평했다. 이렇듯 사라 커닝햄은 자연, 환상 그리고 꿈에서 영감을 받은 복잡한 심리적 풍경을 그려내는 것으로 유명하다. 그녀의 작업은 주로 야간에 이루어지며, 아침까지 그림을 그리면서 짙은 블루와 그린 같은 강렬한 색조를 자주 사용해 새벽의 어두운 분위기를 표현한다. 영국 왕립미술학교에서 석사 학위를 취득했으며, 뉴욕의 알민 레쉬 갤러리와 런던, LA의 리슨 갤러리(Lisson Gallery)에서 개인전을 진행한 바 있다. 그의 작품에서는 동일한 작업의 반복이 두드러지는데, 이는 자연의 숨겨진 부분을 드러내기 위한 지속적인 몸짓으로 볼 수 있다.

Q 버버리 전시에는 어떻게 참여하게 되셨나요? 

제 소속 갤러리인 리슨 갤러리에서 제안을 먼저 받았습니다. 평소 알던 아티스트 Pam Evelyn과 Jemima Murphy가 참여하게 되는 것을 보고 긍정적으로 검토하게 되었습니다. 버버리가 아트 프로그램을 이런 형태로 진행하는 사실을 이전에는 전혀 몰랐었어요. 서울에서는 한번도 전시를 해본 적이 없었기 때문에 굉장히 뜻 깊은 의미인 것 같아요. 

Q 버버리가 전통성이 있는 브랜드이다 보니, 다가오는 의미가 더욱 있었을 것 같습니다. 

버버리의 경우, 체크 패턴이 아주 오래전부터 상징적인 의미가 있잖아요. 그리고 아이코닉한 버버리만의 체크 패턴을 지속적으로 오늘날까지 재해석하고 변형을 주고 있는 부분이 의미가 있는 것 같아요. 예술계에서도 마찬가지로 이전의 것들을 돌아보고, 어떻게 변화하고 있는지 주시해야 한다고 생각해요. 특히 사회적이고 경제적인 부분에 있어서요. 그런 면에서 평행이론이 있는 것 같아요. 그리고 이번 전시를 하면서 제 가족들이 정말 좋아했어요. 버버리는 전통성과 역사성이 있는 유명한 영국 브랜드이니깐요. 

Q 작가님은 주로 영감은 어디에서 얻으시나요? 

자연에서 얻습니다. 그리고 자연 속에 나오는 빛에 영감을 받아요. 자연 자체뿐만 아니라 자연의 모습을 담은 사진들이나, 동서양 페인팅에서도 영감을 받아 다양한 컬러를 활용하고 있어요. 

Q 작가님의 작품 설명을 보니깐 새벽, 아침까지 작업을 하신다고 나와 있더라고요. 그런 부분에서도 영감을 받으시는건지? 

네, 그 부분도 당연히 작용하는 것 같긴 해요. 밤 작업을 하기 때문에 시간의 흐름이 작품에 녹아 들어 있는 것 같습니다. 

Q 작가님은 영국의 신진 아티스트시고, 버버리는 영국을 대표하는 브랜드인데요. 패션계와 예술계의 컬래버레이션이 앞으로 시대에 어떤 영향을 미칠 것이라고 생각하시는지 궁금합니다. 

앞서 이야기한 것과 같이 미술계와 패션계 모두 경제나 사회의 측면에서 역사를 지속적으로 기록하고 있다고 생각합니다. 패션계에서는 훨씬 더 미술계보다는 빠르게 변화하긴 하지만요. 그렇지만 패션이나 미술 모두 대중들이 자연스럽게 본인이 느끼는 감정과 같이 온전하게 받아들여 무한한 상상력을 펼치면 좋을 것 같아요. 

Q 한국에서 처음 선보이신 전시인데, 전달하고 싶으신 메시지가 있으신가요? 

자연스러운 흐름이요. 이 전시가 미술 전시이지만, 패션 브랜드 버버리가 같이 선보이는 전시잖아요. 서로 굉장히 다른 분야가 같은 공간 속에서 자연스러운 흐름으로 함께 공존하는 것처럼, 반드시 규정된 틀 안에 머무를 필요는 없다라는 메시지를 전달 하고 싶어요.
