Burberry Art Space proudly presents "A New British Modernity," the inaugural exhibition in its new series dedicated to showcasing the works of British artists. As a brand deeply rooted in British heritage and a champion of creativity, Burberry seeks to honor and celebrate the vision of emerging talent.

This exhibition highlights the exceptional work of three contemporary female artists—Jemima Murphy, Pam Evelyn, and Sarah Cunningham. Born and raised in the United Kingdom, these artists explore themes of the natural world, environmental abstraction, and subjective experience through their unique artistic perspectives. Their contributions stand as a testament to the evolving narrative of British modernity and innovation in the arts.

there are three aspects superimposed on their paintings: the sincerity of modernist painting, the experimentation of contemporary painting, and private sensation. The first can be attained through learning and research, but the aesthetic characteristics of the second and the third depend on each artist’s real-world, bodily experiences and the sensations the artist wields during her studio practice. When their multileveled strategy is successful, the particular genius mentioned by Baudelaire manifests their works and generates new poncifs in painting.

Jemima Murphy

Jemima Murphy is a London-born artist who offers a unique visual experience through landscapes that reconstruct the sublimity of nature, using colour to create mood and establish a sense of physical distance and space. She works with improvisational body movements, pouring and washing away paint, then adding rhythmic brushstrokes on top. Her work maintains a balance between abundance and scarcity, pain and happiness, the expected and the unexpected.

Pam Evelyn

Born in Surrey, Pam Evelyn intuitively projects life experiences directly onto the canvas, creating complex and vibrant compositions. Her expansive, abstract works possess a dense texture related to the body and materiality, the result of a meditative process of careful layering, scraping and re-expression over time Through repetitive gestures, she builds and reduces layers, resulting in an effect that feels like observing a living, breathing landscape.

Sarah Cunningham

Born in Nottingham, Sarah Cunningham explores the essential and the living through imagined wilderness and ever-changing forest landscapes. Using layers of light and colour, she expresses the mysterious spaces of nature through elements such as flowers, light, sky, and water. Her work emerges from a repetitive process, which can be seen as a continuous gesture aimed at revealing the hidden aspects of nature.
