Flowers in Purgatory is an exhibition that examines places and beings where pain and wounded memories linger, and considers the possibilities for redemption that arise from such conditions. It expands the medieval Christian imagination of purgatory into the context of the present, focusing on the intersections of the living and the dead, and of past and present. 

Suh Yongsun and Kang Jongyeol evoke scenes of unjust deaths and collective trauma from modern Korean history through painting, channeling acts of prayer and mourning to convey narratives of wounded spirits.  Park Chiho investigates the body on the threshold of disappearance and oblivion, exploring existential pain and potential paths to recovery. Park Donghwa paints village life and landscapes that have been marginalized by social prejudice, offering a lyrical visual response that moves beyond sorrow toward hope. FSA Project and other documentary photographic works included in the exhibition record lives during the Great Depression, bringing the value of human dignity and solidarity across time and place into the exhibition. 

This exhibition is grounded in the belief that confronting the roots of suffering initiates the journey toward redemption. It traces the arduous steps of beings seeking to rise again, and through these encounters with memory and presence, Flowers in Purgatory quietly records fragile yet enduring possibilities for hope emerging from wounds.

<연옥에 핀 꽃>은 고통과 상처의 기억이 머무는 장소와 존재를 응시하며, 그 속에서 다시 피어나는 구원의 가능성을 사유하는 전시다. 중세 기독교적 상상 속 정화의 공간인 ‘연옥’을 오늘의 현실로 확장하여, 죽은 자와 산 자, 과거와 현재가 교차하는 지점을 조명한다.

서용선과 강종열은 한국 현대사 속 억울한 죽음과 집단적 비극의 현장을 회화로 불러내며, 기도와 애도의 행위를 통해 상처 입은 영혼의 서사를 담아낸다. 박치호는 소멸과 망각의 경계에 선 인간의 몸을 통해 존재의 고통과 회복의 가능성을 탐색하고, 박동화는 사회적 편견 속에 밀려나 있던 도성마을을 그리며 슬픔을 넘어서는 희망의 노래를 회화로 풀어낸다. 이와 함께 FSA 프로젝트를 비롯한 다큐멘터리 사진 작업들은 대공황기의 삶을 기록하며, 시대와 지역을 넘어 인간에 대한 존엄과 연대의 가치를 전시에 더한다.

이 전시는 고통의 근원을 직시하는 것으로부터 구원을 향한 여정이 시작된다는 믿음을 공유하며, 다시 일어서고자 하는 존재들의 지난한 발걸음을 따라간다. 비탈진 삶의 여정 속에서도 누군가의 기도와 기억이 닿는 자리마다 꽃이 피어나기를 바라는 마음으로, <연옥에 핀 꽃>은 상처 위에 놓인 연약하지만 지속되는 희망의 가능성을 기록한다.
