Han Sungpil

Han Sungpil is an artist who explores the boundaries between nature and the artificial, history and the present, reality and representation through the medium of photography. His work often begins with architecture, landscapes, and cultural heritage, but transcends mere documentation to reflect upon the complex relationship between images and reality. At the heart of his practice lies the theme of “truth and fiction,” through which he reveals both the evidential and illusory qualities of photography. His images, meticulously composed and richly detailed, layer time and memory to create spaces that invite not only visual engagement but also contemplative immersion. By doing so, Han expands the possibilities of photography as a medium and repositions its significance within contemporary visual culture.

Han Sungpil studied photography at Chung-Ang University in Seoul before completing a master’s degree in Curating Contemporary Design, a joint program of Kingston University and the Design Museum in London. He has held more than thirty solo exhibitions across the globe, including in Argentina, Australia, Spain, and Japan, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions and biennales worldwide. His works have been presented at major institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea; the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston; the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art; the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum; and the National Museum of Fine Arts, Argentina. Beyond these, he has exhibited in countries including Mongolia, China, the United States, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium, Russia, Slovakia, Lithuania, the United Arab Emirates, New Zealand, Brazil, Cuba, and more, establishing himself as an internationally active artist.

한성필은 사진 매체를 통해 자연과 인공, 역사와 현재, 실재와 재현의 경계를 탐구하는 작가이다. 그의 작업은 건축과 풍경, 문화유산과 장소성을 출발점으로 삼아, 그것을 단순히 기록하는 차원을 넘어 이미지와 현실의 관계를 성찰하게 한다. 특히 ‘진실과 허구’라는 주제를 중심으로, 사진이 지닌 기록성과 허구성을 동시에 드러내며, 관람자로 하여금 세계를 인식하는 방식과 이미지가 현실을 구성하는 방식을 되묻게 한다. 정교한 구성과 세밀한 디테일 속에 시간과 기억의 층위를 켜켜이 쌓아 올리는 그의 사진은, 보는 이로 하여금 단순한 시각적 체험을 넘어 사유적 몰입의 장으로 이끈다. 이처럼 한성필의 작업은 사진을 매개로 한 예술적 실험의 가능성을 확장하며, 동시대 시각문화 속에서 사진의 위치를 새롭게 환기한다.

한성필은 중앙대학교 사진학과를 졸업한 후, 영국 킹스턴 대학교(Kingston University)와 디자인 박물관(The Design Museum)의 공동 프로그램인 현대 디자인 큐레이팅(Curating Contemporary Design) 석사 과정을 마쳤다. 그는 아르헨티나, 호주, 스페인, 일본 등 세계 각지에서 30회 이상의 개인전을 개최했으며, 국립현대미술관, 휴스턴현대미술관, 상하이현대미술관, 도쿄사진미술관, 아르헨티나국립미술관 등 주요 기관을 비롯해 몽골, 일본, 중국, 미국, 프랑스, 독일, 영국, 스페인, 이탈리아, 벨기에, 러시아, 슬로바키아, 리투아니아, 아랍에미리트, 호주, 뉴질랜드, 브라질, 쿠바, 아르헨티나 등지의 미술관 및 국제 비엔날레에 참여하며 국제적인 활동을 이어가고 있다.
