Lee Jeonglok

Lee Jeonglok has developed a photographic practice that does not merely reproduce the visible world but seeks to reveal the invisible and fundamental realm underlying it. His work visualizes spiritual energy and mystery through a distinctive technique of light painting that combines instantaneous and continuous light. By superimposing flash bursts onto long-exposed film, Lee created images that capture unseen dimensions of energy, transforming photography into a medium for metaphysical exploration. His practice often engages with nature as the origin of life and with historical sites where humans and nature once interacted, recording these in black and white or reconstructing them with symbolic signs of light. Series such as Personal Sacred Place, which condenses the energy of sacred sites; Decoding Scape, which translates invisible forces into symbolic forms; Nabi, where inspiration is crystallized as butterflies; Tree of Life, evoking the vitality of nature; and LUCA, visualizing the origin of life and its explosive unfolding, together articulate a body of work that situates photography at the intersection of the spiritual and the poetic.

Born in Gwangju in 1971, Lee studied Photography Design at Gwangju University and Hongik University before completing his MFA in Photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York in 2002. He held his first solo exhibition, Southern Land, in 1998 and has since presented more than thirty solo exhibitions alongside numerous group shows in Korea and abroad. His work affirms photography’s capacity to transcend representation, positioning him as a leading figure in contemporary Korean photography.

이정록은 가시적인 세계를 단순히 재현하는 데 머무르지 않고, 그 이면에 내재된 보이지 않는 근원적 세계에 주목하며 작업해왔다. 작가는 영적인 신비와 에너지를 시각화하고자 하였으며, 순간광과 지속광을 중첩하는 라이트 페인팅 기법을 통해 자신만의 독창적인 사진 언어를 확립하였다. 필름 카메라의 장노출 위에 플래시의 순간광을 겹쳐 이미지를 만드는 방식은 눈에 보이지 않는 차원의 에너지를 시각화하는 도구로 작동하였다. 그의 사진은 생명의 기원으로서의 자연과, 인간과 자연이 교류했던 역사적 장소를 탐색하며, 그곳에 응축된 상징과 기운을 기록하거나 재구성하는 작업으로 이어졌다. ‘사적 성소’에서는 영적 장소에 깃든 공간의 에너지를 응축하였고, ‘Decoding Scape’에서는 보이지 않는 에너지를 상징적 기호로 표현하였다. 또한 영감의 빛을 나비의 형상으로 압축한 ‘Nabi’, 자연의 신비한 생명력을 시각화한 ‘Tree of Life’, 생명의 기원과 폭발적 분화의 에너지를 드러낸 ‘LUCA’ 시리즈를 통해, 사진을 매개로 한 영적·철학적 탐구를 시도하였다.

이정록은 1971년 광주에서 태어나 광주대학교 산업디자인학과와 홍익대학교 산업미술대학원에서 사진디자인을 전공하였으며, 2002년 뉴욕 로체스터공과대학(Rochester Institute of Technology) 영상예술대학원에서 순수사진을 전공하였다. 1998년 첫 개인전 「남녘땅」을 개최한 이후 국내외에서 30여 회 이상의 개인전을 열었고, 다수의 그룹전에 참여하며 국제적인 활동을 이어왔다. 그의 작품은 사진예술이 재현을 넘어 영적 차원의 탐구를 수행할 수 있음을 보여주며, 한국을 대표하는 사진작가로서 확고한 위치를 차지하였다.
