Wang Qingsong

Wang Qingsong is one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Chinese photography, known for his large-scale, theatrical works that combine pictorial composition with cinematic staging. Since the mid-1990s, he has expanded his practice from painting and installation to photography and video, constructing elaborate sets filled with models and symbolic props to reflect on rapid social change, collective desire, and cultural contradictions in contemporary China. His visually striking works, often layered with humor and satire, explore the tension between tradition and modernity, history and consumerism, individuality and mass culture.

After graduating from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1993, Wang has been based in Beijing, holding over forty solo exhibitions worldwide. He has participated in major biennales such as the Taipei Biennial (1998), Gwangju Biennale (2000), Shanghai Biennale (2008), Sydney Biennale (2010), Kiev International Biennale (2012), Venice Biennale China Pavilion (2013), and Istanbul Biennale (2013). His notable solo exhibitions include the International Center of Photography, New York (2011); Wuhan United Art Museum (2019); Museum of Photography, Seoul (2019); and Tang Contemporary Art Center, Beijing (2020). In 2006, he received the Outreach Award at Rencontres d’Arles in France. Beyond his artistic practice, Wang has served as chief curator for the Changjiang International Photography and Video Biennale and is currently Artistic Director of the Chengdu Contemporary Image Museum, fostering exhibitions for both established and emerging artists worldwide.

Wang’s works are housed in more than sixty major museum collections, including The Museum of Modern Art (USA), The Getty Museum (USA), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (USA), Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art (Australia), MUMOK (Austria), Victoria and Albert Museum (UK), Art Tower Mito (Japan), Musée Européen de la Photographie (France), Daegu Art Museum (Korea), as well as the Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum, Guangdong Museum of Art, and Hubei Museum of Art in China.

왕칭송은 중국 동시대 사진예술을 대표하는 작가로, 회화적 장면 구성과 영화적 스케일을 결합하여 사회 변화와 집단적 욕망을 풍자적으로 드러내는 작업을 선보였다. 초기에는 회화와 설치를 넘나들며 매체 실험을 지속하였고, 1996년부터는 사진과 영상 작업으로 영역을 확장하여 거대한 세트와 인물을 활용해 현대 중국 사회의 상징적 장면을 연출하였다. 화려한 색채, 세밀하게 연출된 무대, 다층적 서사를 통해 전통과 현대, 소비문화와 역사, 개인과 집단의 긴장 관계를 드러내었으며, 동시대 시각문화의 경계를 확장하는 작업 세계를 구축하였다.

왕칭송은 1993년 쓰촨미술대학(Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts)을 졸업한 후 베이징을 기반으로 활동하였으며, 현재까지 40여 회 이상의 개인전을 개최하였다. 그는 타이베이 비엔날레(1998), 광주비엔날레(2000), 상하이비엔날레(2008), 시드니비엔날레(2010), 키이우 국제비엔날레(2012), 베니스비엔날레 중국관(2013), 이스탄불비엔날레(2013) 등 국제무대에 활발히 참여하였다. 주요 개인전으로는 뉴욕 국제사진센터(ICP, 2011), 우한 United Art Museum(2019), 서울 Museum of Photography(2019), 베이징 Tang Contemporary Art Center(2020) 등이 있으며, 2006년 프랑스 아를 사진축제(Rencontres d’Arles)에서 Outreach Award를 수상하였다. 또한 장강국제사진·영상비엔날레의 수석 큐레이터로 참여하여 국제적 교류의 장을 확장하였고, 현재 청두 현대영상미술관(Chengdu Contemporary Image Museum)의 예술감독으로 활동하며 국제 작가들의 전시를 기획하고 있다.

왕칭송의 작품은 뉴욕현대미술관(MoMA), 게티미술관, 샌프란시스코현대미술관, 퀸즐랜드미술관·호주현대미술관, 오스트리아 MUMOK, 영국 빅토리아 앤 앨버트 미술관(V&A), 일본 미토현대미술관, 프랑스 유럽사진미술관(MEP), 한국 대구미술관, 중국 중앙미술원미술관·광동미술관·후베이미술관 등 전 세계 60여 곳의 주요 미술관에 소장되었다.
