Yao Lu combines the aesthetics of traditional Chinese landscape painting with contemporary photographic practice, addressing the rapid transformations of Chinese society and the environmental challenges that accompany them. From afar, his photographs appear serene and harmonious, echoing the compositional elegance of classical painting. Yet upon closer inspection, they reveal construction sites, debris, and refuse hidden beneath layers of illusion—an artistic strategy that exposes the tension between tradition and modernity. This visual duality compels the viewer to confront the fragile boundary between reality and fiction, while urging reflection on the need for environmental preservation and a more harmonious future.

Born in Beijing in 1967, Yao Lu received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) and later completed a Master of Visual Arts in a joint program between CAFA and Griffith University’s Queensland College of Art in Australia. He is currently a Professor of Photography at CAFA, where he continues to develop his distinctive practice of photomontage informed by classical aesthetics and contemporary concerns. His work has been widely exhibited across China, as well as in France, Italy, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Korea. In 2008, he was awarded the Paris Photo Prize for Contemporary Photography, affirming his international recognition.

야오 루는 중국 전통 산수화의 미학을 현대 사진 매체와 결합하여 동시대 중국 사회의 급격한 변화와 그로 인한 환경 문제를 은유적으로 드러내는 작업을 이어오고 있다. 그의 사진은 멀리서 바라보면 고요하고 조화로운 자연 풍경처럼 보이지만, 가까이 다가서면 쓰레기 더미, 건설 잔해, 개발 현장이 드러나며, 이는 전통적 아름다움의 외피 속에 감춰진 현대 사회의 긴장을 드러낸다. 이러한 시각적 이중성은 현실과 허구 사이의 경계를 탐구하게 하며, 더 나아가 지속 가능한 환경과 조화로운 미래에 대한 성찰을 유도한다.

1967년 베이징에서 태어난 야오 루는 중앙미술학원(CAFA) 판화학과에서 학사 과정을 마친 뒤, 호주 그리피스대학교 퀸즐랜드 예술대학과 중앙미술학원이 공동 운영한 시각예술 석사 과정을 졸업하였다. 현재 중앙미술학원 사진학 교수로 재직 중이며, 포토몽타주 기법을 활용해 전통적 회화 양식을 차용하면서도 동시대적 문제의식을 담아내는 독창적인 사진 작업을 전개해왔다. 그는 중국을 비롯해 프랑스, 이탈리아, 미국, 영국, 호주, 한국 등 세계 여러 지역에서 전시를 열었으며, 2008년에는 파리 포토상(Paris Photo Prize, Contemporary Photography)을 수상하며 국제적 주목을 받았다.
